grants for housing and school for single non working moms?

I just got laid off and a friend of mine told me now would be a good time to check into grants for housing and school for single moms since I am not working now and really need to go back to school to get my degree to better myself and provide more for my kids. So my question is…Is it true the government has grants like these for single moms to help with their living expenses like housing, food and utilities along with school?

There are no government grants specifically for single mothers. You would fill out the same application and apply for the same grants as every other student. Fill out the FAFSA, it’s based on your income and theoretically a single mother with no job is probably very low income and you would qualify for the maximum award.

single mom wants to get an scholarship to College?

I’m a single mom and I’ve heard about Government Scholarships and Grants for Single Moms. I work full time but I’m going nowhere here because I don’t have a degree. I definitely want to go to school and get a much better position ($ $ ). A friend of mine told me she finished her career with a government scholarship an even her expenses were covered, as she couldn’t work while in School. Is this true? Where can i find info?

Appreciate your comments!

You need to fill out the FAFSA. There are no special “Obama grants” for single moms or anything like that. Those are a scam.

http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

Fill out your FAFSA form at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/index.htm just follow the steps if not call the number on the website to help you fill it out.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (known as the FAFSA) is a form that can be filled out annually by current and anticipating college students (both undergraduate and graduate) in the United States to determine their eligibility for federal student financial aid (including Pell grants, Stafford loans, PLUS loans, and work-study programs).[1] In addition, most states and schools use information from the FAFSA to award non-federal aid.

once that is done, check some scholarship websites:

GOOD LUCK!

you can get a grant. you can probley get a grant to pay for school too. but it can be a process. and don’t fall for those web site that say they can get you a grant. it will cost you money and the results are not always there. it is better to do it your self. but like i said it is a process

Go to the following:

Financial aid department at your school
County/State Vocational Rehabilitation. You may be able to get funding because of being laid off from your job.
County/State Family Services and unemployment office – you may be eligible for food stamps and/or unemployment.
County/State Department of Labor – You’ll probably need to get some kind of a part-time job – the school folks may be able to help with this too and they may have some kind of a job that works in with your study issues.
Your church. Your minister may know of other things that are available to you.

Go to http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ and register for free. Then go to www.fastweb.com and register for free.

What is a good resource for single mothers who need grants for continuing education?

I’m looking to go back to college, I graduated back in 2003. I’m a single mom and I work one full time job. I’ve been searching for grants that can help me further my education and I’ve applied for the pell grant and another one. But that leaves me about 5,000 short for school. I don’t want to have to apply for a loan because I know they check credit and that takes off points on my credit score. Does anyone know of any charities, business, government grants or scholarships that award or give money for college? I don’t know if it helps but my major is digital movie production.

If you have your bachelor’s degree already, you do not qualify for the Pell Grant at all. The Pell Grant pretty much pays for one degree. However, there are scholarships out there. If you are planning on attending graduate school, there is the research or graduate assistant programs which pays for your tuition and a monthly stipend. I will include some free resources below to find money for college. Good luck!

I have of several scholarships for single mothers. There are also grants for people who are the first in their family to attend college. Did you apply for the federal loans? They do not check your credit and are need based. To apply for these types of loans you will need to fill out at a FAFSA. ou can do this on-line. The aforementionied scholoraships can be found at fastweb.com. Good Luck!

OK just so we are clear, federal Stafford student loans do NOT look at your credit and do not run a credit check that will take points off of your credit score. Private student loans do, but they also have higher interest rates so your best bet is the federal Stafford loan anyway. Go to the financial aid office at the school you want to go to and see how much you qualify for in Stafford loans. There may also be some state programs that you can qualify for. Scholarships too! The financial aid office is the best resource for this type of information and they can help you walk through what you need. Good luck!

are there real government grants for free?

I am a single mom on low income and i heard that there are free government grants for eligible people to go to school or start a small buisness etc. if so where can i find out more information and thank you in advance and have a great day.

government grants for female business owners

Yes there are free grants, if you want to start a new business or to just go to school. I heard about it on the television. You should go to the library there is a book were it tells you how to go about getting these free grants. I think the book is called free government grants…..I hope this help…….

check this website out. It helps!

http://usgovinfo.about.com/library/weekly/blstatemoney.htm?terms=small+business+grants

good luck!

Yes there are grants for schools, but NOT for starting a business contrary to what you heard

You can check about Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ or the Federal Pell Grant http://studentaid.ed.gov/students/publications/student_guide/2004_2005/english/types.htm

It is hard to find grants to start a business. Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for a for-profit business. And yes, grants mean PAPERWORK – lots and lots of it, that is why a cottage industry of grant writers was born.

Nonetheless, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov – these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support a for-profit venture.

Even if you buy books on “how to get grants” or list that supposedly has information on grants — all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently. But still the info is the same – hardly any grants for starting a for profit business.

Even SBA does NOT give out grants. From the SBA website http://www.sba.gov/expanding/grants.html

“The U.S. Small Business Administration does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, although it does offer a wide variety of loan programs. (See http://www.sba.gov/financing for more information) While SBA does offer some grant programs, these are generally designed to expand and enhance organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments.”

Here is a listing of federal grants for small businesses. See if there is any available for individuals for starting a business — THERE’S NONE.

http://12.46.245.173/pls/portal30/CATALOG.BROWSE_BENEF_RPT.show

Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT – Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program

Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women’s Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women’s business center that will train women entrepreneurs

Your state can help you on this. my sister, who is a single mom herself, was eligible to go to college for free.
